I had same situation in 2000 with the MV"Fas Gulf" , on a smaller scale, the vessel ahead of us southbound lost its engine and grounded. We managed to stop, not that difficult as the distances between the ships are sufficient and the speed isn,t high. We went then with the bow into the sand at a 45 degree angle and waited for about 4 hrs until the vessel ahead was free again.

Spoke to a very senior source on board the vessel today.
The steering gear 'malfunctioned', the rudder went hard over and stayed put until the engineers fixed the glitch.
Damage below the water line to the FPT (Fore peak tank) which requires underwater repairs, afloat.
