The ship
The vessel Yara Birkeland will be the world’s first fully electric and autonomous container ship, with zero emissions. KONGSBERG is responsible for development and delivery of all key enabling technologies including the sensors and integration required for remote and autonomous ship operations, in addition to the electric drive, battery and propulsion control systems.
A 100 -150 TEU open top container vessel. A fully battery powered solution, prepared for remote control and autonomous operation. The following describes our concept design. The design company and the final design will be decided by the end of Q2 2017, and the delivering ship yard within Q3 2017.

Operational area
The vessel will sail within 12 nautical miles from the coast, between 3 ports in southern Norway. The whole area is completely covered the The Norwegian Coastal Administrations' VTS system at Brevik. The distances between the ports are:

Herøya – Brevik (approx. 7 nm)
Herøya – Larvik (approx. 30 nm)

Milestones
2017: Design finalised - design done by Marin Teknikk, Norway.
Building contract awarded.
2018: The vessel will be delivered from the yard in the second half of 2018.
2018: Testing with a captain and small crew, placed in a container-based bridge and crew unit, is scheduled to start second half of 2018.
2019: Remote control tests will be carried out in 2019.
2020: The vessel will be fully autonomous in 2020.

I very much like it's design on those pics - appears to be more "beautiful" & cooler than the earlier Revolt.  That leaning foremast must be retractable somehow or it would be an obstruction when loading containers in the fore-hold.

Also, if this ship will really sail as they say, our dear member Tomas might be the one frequently supplying us with pics of her from his drone/bridge.  Wink

Perhaps that's not a fore-hold.  It's the pop-up accommodation and wheelhouse for the early years.

@Capt Ted - you will need a new signature text!
