Eugen Maersk
« on: April 26, 2017, 06:48:45 PM »
The Eugen Maersk has recently been modified along with some other Maersk E Class ships. The photo attached shows a significant amount of steel boxing has been added under the funnel which spans the width of the ship and is half as tall as the wheel house. Can anyone tell me the purpose of this boxing please?

Scrubber unit.

Here's some info on the upgrade of the "Emma" class:

Hi Lappino, many thanks for the reply. I had already seen the information provided on the Felixstowedocker's blog but was unsure about the scrubber theory as Maersk are not installing them on their ships at the moment apparently. As far as I'm aware, they have only ever installed one as a trial back in 2013.
Could the boxing be serving any other purpose other than to house a scrubber?

Hi Jeff,

The added structure are anti-rolling tanks. They are this high mounted to have a greater effect.
This to ease the forces on the lashings as these ships with the elevated bridge and higher lashing bridges can now go eleven high stacking on deck.

Cheers,
Roy
