Barge names and numbers
« on: April 18, 2017, 10:00:55 PM »
It is probably something that most of us here already know, but I cannot find any explanation. Why most barges names contain numbers (e.g. Max 1234 or Big 6789 or America 3456)? It doesn't seem to be linked to their size, capacity, hull numbers or ordinal numbers.

I assume that there are that much barges in countries like USA that they would run out of names. call them Kirby 001 and 002 and so on if the owner is KIRBY is easy and easy to recognise.
NOW!!!,,,if we could get rid of the sailors,,how safe shipping would be !!!!!!!!

Also, companies don't necessarily start at "1" - they may start at 100 or 1000 or something else (if only to avoid "leading zeros", like 001).  Some will design numbering systems with the some digits representing size (eg tonnage or length), the year of purchase, the type etc.  Capt Ted picked the best example - Kirby alone have nearly 1200 barges on the US register that are numbered just like that.

Hi everyone,

here's a website for all you barge lovers. It's in Dutch, but who cares. On this site, you can find most of the EU barges.

See you,
