Mv Mustafa Kan sinks off Italy
« on: September 26, 2016, 01:18:10 PM »
Reading reports that the Mv Mustafa Kan, blt 2009 (IMO 9462263) has sunk off Italy after springing a leak in the engine room.

Any further info to hand?

Thanks

According to this (https://www.fleetmon.com/maritime-news/2016/15123/mustafa-kan-didnt-sink-capsized-vessel-taken-tow/), finally she didnot sink ...just capsized (upside-down position) and a greek Tug tows her.
In the meantime  understanding the tug and monitoring it at AIS,she goes 11 knots(!!!)

They put the decimal point in now: MED FOS now making a more realistic 1kn, ESE "for orders".

Is the towing tug the MED FOS or the PANTANASSA?

A bit odd.  As you said, Petros, PANTANASSA (52tbp) is racing back from the scene to Piraeus at a steady 11kn.  ETA Piraeus 10.00UTC 3/10, and not indicating that she has anything in tow, and certainly not a capsized vessel

Meanwhile MED FOS (98tbp) plods on at 1kn ESE-wards, showing restricted manoeuvrability.  All that is consistent with the tow (VesselTracker "The wreck was now pulled at an extremely slow speed towards Cyprus").

So it seems likely to me that both tugs were involved in the recovery of the capsized vessel.  PANTANASSA sailed from off Neapoli Voion on 26/9, arriving Augusta STS area 29/9; MED FOS was a day behind, sailing from Lavrion nr Piraeus 27/9 and arriving in the casualty area 29/9.

If PANTANASSA is still involved, perhaps she is to pick up further equipment and rendezvous with MED FOS later.

MED FOS continuing her sub-1kn eastward passage now past halfway between Sicily and Greece.

No sign of anything coming to meet her yet.  PANTANASSA is busying herself around Piraeus area.

Med Fos seems to have left the operation , now sailing with 10 knots , when in the same time Christos XXII sails some miles Souther with 0.8...

Yes Petros.  Looks as if MED FOS returning to her salvage station at Lavrion.
Intentions of CHRISTOS XXII not yet clear as she has started on a southwesterly course, rather than the previous generally eastward progress, but one to watch tomorrow.

Looks as if MED FOS went to Pylos to pick up something and has now returned to rendezvous with CHRISTOS XXII and MUSTAFA KAN.  (MED FOS showing destination as "BE OLN", but that is the code for a town 25 miles up the Albert Canal east of Antwerp, so presumably an error!)

Presumably still in capsized tow of MED FOS.
A few days ago MED FOS was about 150m WSW of Crete, heading ESE at about 1kn

Strange enough, towing a ship bottom up which doesn't want to sink, for such a long time. I wonder what the plans may be with such a vessel.

MED FOS apparently still towing the ship and now south of Crete near Gavdos island, and continuing a meandering course at +/-1kn.
No definitive news of intentions seen anywhere.
