Re: What is the point? Multiple Photos

Am I alone in wondering about the purpose of having similar photographs? As examples, I offer:

http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2507390

and

http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2507389

Or from the same photographer (at the same port):

http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2524761

and

http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2524760

A look at this photographer's postings shows that such duplication is common. He is certainly not the only one. I can just about understand a bow view, a broadside view and a stern view - but only just understand. But more than one image from almost the same angle is absurd and achieves nothing.

Maybe I'm just a cynic but I believe it's all about ego-tripping and playing the numbers game. It would take a long time to clock up 24,000 or 39,000-odd photos on the site without shooting the same ship more than once. It just lights some people's candle to have more pics on the site than the next person. And since there is no longer any accolade on this site for being THE top poster, there really isn't much point. And it makes the site look a bit sad and boring at times

Hi coasterwatcher

The site is a collection of member's albums, not one album (except for Shipping Companies Funnel Marks)

Always provided Site Standards are met, any member is entitled to use personal judgement as to frequency, range and location of pics of one vessel uploaded to his/her album.

Bob,

Quantity and not Quality is also a guideline for some.

It's a perfectly valid question, coastwatcher, and it is asked from time to time.

It is important to remember that ShipSpotting is not a top-down single collection of photos of ships, selected by Admin; rather it is a platform for members to share their photos in their individual galleries, and to enjoy each others' images, along with the general public. Members motivations for posting more or fewer images vary, and the flexibility of the site allows for all to be accommodated, and I see no need to judge others' objectives, provided they do not impinge directly on other members.

The site has a small number of "site standards" to try to ensure that all images are of good quality or better and maintain a focus on the depiction of ships themselves.
http://www.shipspotting.com/support/faq.php?category=Site%20standards%20for%20photos

Amongst these is 12. Multiple photos: When posting multiple photos of the same vessel taken on the same Date, the submission must be restricted to a maximum of 4 photographs with a significant change of Aspect/Angle between the photographs.

The Photo Admin try their best to ensure that this respected, but it remains a matter of judgement, and I am sure that we miss some where the difference is too small.

Our hope is that all members and visitors find what they want to see, and that they are not too bothered about repeated views of the same ship, whether by the same photographer of different, and just pass on to something more pleasing.  For the record, we have been assured that the total number of images is not a problem from a resource point of view - if that were to change, we would of course consider how best to respond.

The end is,- in my undereducated view, is that members will post, no, DUMP similar photos all the time on this fine site.
I would actually like to dare the members to make an effort. Walk an extra mile, try another angle, step it up! It does not take that much either.

This is written not with love for this site.

Be a leader, not a follower. Post quality, not quantity.

This has to change because many members post 3 photos of the same vessel either the angle is same or some metres (neither 0,2 miles away) so as their 3 photos be shown always and get more views... Not only Greeks but also from other countries.

This is why I have stopped a long time ago to post photos... I have told it to them face to face but it seems they don't understand it.. So I write it also in public so they will understand at the end.

May I respectfully suggest that the site is almost out of control. It is awash with pointless duplication. Consider the following:
http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2271106

http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2271104

http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2271103

http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2271101

http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2268270

http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2268269

http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2265291

Seven photographs of the same ship on the same day at the same place, six of these being the starboard side of the ship.

I understand that the site is a collection of members' galleries, but as Bob says, it is becoming sad and boring.

And I'm afraid that I have to disagree with you, davidships. I suggest that members and visitors are indeed becoming bothered by repeated views of the same ship. That is the comment I hear - I think I am not a lone voice.

For the record, it doesn't bother me.

I don't even bother to check to see how many times a photo of the same ship has been posted. There are more important things in life to worry about.

Thanks for the contributions to this discussion so far.  Views of more members are welcome and the Admin group will review this in due course.

Just to add to the factuals, prior to 3 Nov 2014 a member's daily limit per ship was six, and it was reduced to four from that date.  The announcement is here:
http://forum.shipspotting.com/index.php/topic,13558.msg72025.html#msg72025

I believe that the "significant change of Aspect/Angle" rule had already been in place before then, but confirmation of when that dated back to would be helpful.

The "different angle" rule came in around 2008/9 and it was laid down that there had to be a difference of at least 30 degrees between each shot.

This is ridiculous and seems to be simply another admin or site-bashing thread. I have no problem with the way multiple photos are currently handled here. Anyone who is bothered can always go elsewhere. Simple.
