RV Discovery
« on: July 28, 2016, 05:33:13 PM »
Can someone help my confusion regarding a small UK research vessel.  Im Equasis, the only RV Discovery is IMO 8861632.  We have one coming into Southampton IMO 9135230, which is not in Equasis.  Photographs on the web show an almost identical vessel under both IMO numbers.   If 9135230 is the extant version, what happened to the 8861632 vessel ?

Boith show the same call sign, 2AEL8 and the same MMSI 235058988

Can anyone throw any light on this?

Allan

Hi Allan, not sure if it helps but prior to 2007 (when became research vessel) it was USA trawler. [2007 cv to research vessel] - 1992 SEA ANGEL, 2001 THUAN LOI - 2006 ASHLEY NICOLE - 2007 RV DISCOVERY (data from Miramar). Miramar does not show 9135230. The only reference I can find to 9135230 is in Fleetmon which highlights it as erroneous.

Have just done the calculation re obtaining IMO number + check number. 9135230 does not compute as a legit IMO number.

Hi Chas

thanks, that's cracked it - typical Southampton VTS, who seem to understand nothing about ships.  They have mixed up official number with IMO by adding an 0 to the o/n.

More likely the ship's agent or the ship itself when notifying ABP/VTS of future arrival
