Thanks for discussing this topic.

Here are some actual publications from the german shipbuilding department of the IG Metall / German Metal Workers Union. (Download links). My special hint goes to Point 1 below with the passengerships orderbooks of the german/european/worldwide shipbuilding industry:

Around 50% of the orderbook is sitting with the Fincantieri Group, which may have to do with some favourable conditions for ordering these ships in Italy... ;)

My knowledge of european shipbuilding became over the years faded, appreciated if someone can shed some light on below.

Italy, favorite conditions as in subsidies ?

and what is the difference between meyer , Pap and Meyer, Turku , beside that one is in Germany and the other in Finland ?
NOW!!!,,,if we could get rid of the sailors,,how safe shipping would be !!!!!!!!

Hi Captain Ted, there is one simple reason why Europe was number 1 in new orders (in terms of value) in Q1 2016: the boom in the cruise ship market coupled to the downturn in almost all other shipbuilding segments.

Asian yards have not yet mastered the art of building cruise ships, while European yards have specialised in it (and in offshore ships and other non-cargo carrying vessels).
Mitsubishi has failed spectactularly on the AIDAPRIMA and AIDAPERLA (total accumulated loss on the two ships over

@rd77,, thanks infos,, sounds to me more like a big reason and not a simple.
After all, ships constructionwise (looks) not much has changed in Asia since buying construction plans. As for inventions and innovations, not much either as far as I know.
I still remember the words of a head of superintendents department of a big german company when I asked
him, how was the sea trial trip (three ships in 10 days) and his answer : It should become law that chinese are not allowed to build ships, if it weren,t for the cheap prices , nobody in his sound mind would order ships there !!!

Quality improved since I hear,(wasn,t a long time on a chinsese constructed vessel) but even that seems a long lerning curve which is not achieved yet

NOW!!!,,,if we could get rid of the sailors,,how safe shipping would be !!!!!!!!
