It was originally reported as having engine problems? which caused it to ground. It will be interesting if any more info is provided with the engine problem scenario?

Vessel was refloated late at night Apr 29 or early in the morning Apr 30, by joint efforts of 6 tugs, and towed to outer anchorage Suez, Gulf of Suez. As of 1800 UTC May 1, vessel is in the same position, anchored on Suez road. Grounding was caused by generators malfunction, leading to a blackout, and steering failure.

The ship is in dry-dock now. The generator failure caused by two jammed injection pumps.

Didn,t they have a 2nd generator on stand by running during the Suez transit ?

sounds funny to me,, generator problems with power outage.
When I transit with any ship a channel or entering port a 2nd generator is always running
on stand by.

Well in the last 30 days or so she seemed to get over to Dalian ShipYard under its own power? Sounds funny to me also. Headed there for the required survey after the incident?

Deep Sea Diver,,, that is nothing real unusual that vessels sail long distances after a grounding.
They sure had divers to asses below water damage and the gen=sets will have been surveyed by the class.

I hear you Captain Ted, and you for sure know more than I do. And I do appreciate all of your knowledge. I am just trying to learn some of this stuff. But two jammed injection pumps? Nobody on the proper lookout? Just a thought. And it just happens to occur in the narrow waterway.  Accidents do happen. I just hear the bridge crew go port go port.

Two generators were ran in parallel. One stopped because of mechanical failure. They say problem was the injection pumps. The power was taken over by the second generator and got overloaded so it switched off. 450 reefers was on board, which consumes a lot. When blackout happens restarting the systems takes time, and during this period the steering gear is not working. On a smaller ship this time is short, max a minute but on so large vessel it can take few minutes.

That makes some good sense mcmoha thanks for the good explanation. 450 reefers is alot. Especially if they are 40 footers. How did you find out that 450 reefer containers were on board? Thanks

well,if a full blackout happens the emergency generator kicks in automatically. This gen supplies
power for essentials only, but it includes one steering gear motor. Of course nowadays there is no manual hydraulic operated steering wheel on the bridge, the emergency set up for steering a ship is
nowadays from the steering room. On a big vessel like that, even getting there takes 1-3 minutes depending where the peoples are who have it in their emergency duty plan.
Even when it can be activated in that time period, those steering arrangements are not easy to operate and when one does the monthly checks and lets steer the peoples by hand for a while to get a feel for it the general course line can be kept at sea but steering with the set up the ship through a canal like the Suez is virtually impossible.

I know the facts from my good friend who was on board. By the way i was chief engineer, spent 30 years at sea, so have some idea what is going on during blackout. My friend did not said anything about emergency generator and i did not asked.

ok, I referred to your first posting,, where you write it was a black out and no power anymore for the steering. But should not then the emergency generator have automatically started ?  As far as I know it is a requirement by class that in case of blackout the EM gen kicks in automatic.
Would be interesting to know if it did or not
