What are your priorities when viewing a photograph?
« on: February 03, 2016, 06:48:55 AM »
In order of priority and probably because I'm just a bit weird, the first 3 things I like to know about a vessel when it comes onto the database, is as follows:

1)  Location of photo
2)  Build year
3)  Current location

My 2nd priority used to be the vessels builder.

Kind regards,

As a general rule of thumb for me:

1. Vessel type (there are several categories on the site where I never open up any photo)
2. Age of the photo, (historic shots are more interesting than new ones, everybody is a "photographer" these days)
3. Location of the photto (photos taken in Asia tend to show more ships that never make it to my area)

A) The photo itself (regarding greatness, interest, quality standards being met).
B) Name/IMO (to see if it's correct or missing for this photo).

1) Year of built (often I try to guess it by the looks of the vessel & then see if I'm right).
2) Length & Breadth (to imagine how big the ship is, of course).
3) Builder (was) (to know why this ship looks like this & sometimes to find other (sister) ships by that yard).
4) Type/Category (to know the type & see if the photo is placed correctly).
5) Owner/Manager (was) (sometimes to find their site, more ship infos & GA plans if a vessel is very interesting for me to look further in to).
7) Date/Location (to feel how fresh is this photo & where it was made, of course).

To be impressive. To be caught from an angle that can blow you away. Anything caught in that shot besides the ship is good for that photo. Also each photo has to tell a story, and that story can improve if anything else can be caught in that shot.

Yes, that's the point - can a photo tell a story. Only this is what is making a good photo.

I am surprised that nobody so far has been honest enough to tell that the first thing they look at is the number of comments that a picture has generated.  ;)

The number of views to even a mediocre shot explodes when someboday places a comment, so somehow it is factor that significantly counts....

This morning I posted three shots, one got a comment and has already been seen quite a lot, while another shot showed a (to me much more interesting) ship for the very first time on the site, and the number of views are far less.....

The "Peters Look" ships, like those from Sietas, have a big fan club so are likely to get a few comments and hence more hits.
I notice, though, that there are a number of little mutual-admiration "cliques" on the site that get lots of hits for their sometimes-indifferent photos while other, better or more-interesting ones quickly disappear into the depths of the site without many people viewing them.
Interesting SHIPS are what I look for first on this site. I am not too bothered about the skill of the photographer who posted it and will certainly not be waxing lyrical about the light, ambience or composition of the photo. But that's just my view.

Bob, I posted the Angela F. because she was next in my alfabetical shoebox. ;).and I think it is the ship that makes me look at a picture, but indeed sometimes you can see what a photographer has been trying to achieve and where he succeeded. Last week I posted a shot of one of the Maersk triple E ships, virtually similar to one posted a bit earlier by somebody else, but because of my position, the light and the possibly my post processing programme and the hardware, the shot looked quite different. I put comments to that respect in my description and invited comments to make a comparison between the two shots. Most likely nobody cared to read it as there was no reaction at all.
