NORDIC CHANTEL
« on: January 06, 2016, 10:05:58 PM »
I have just been looking at some pictures of this vessel that I took in Gt.Yarmouth a while back and I have never got round to asking what the large box like structure is on the port side,I can see there is a shutter on the seaward side but would appreciate if anyone could enlighten me to its purpose, thanks in anticipation Andy [TX2]

She's a general cargo ship with a side door / loader: http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2367746
The "box" has a platform inside it that can go up/down: forklifters in the ship's hold put palleted cargo on that platform, it lifts it & forklifters at the quay pick it up. Theres a pic on http://www4.hcmut.edu.vn/~dantn/shipcon/ShipConPart6.pdf (page 20 or "294").
Regards,
Denis
