US Coast Guard Icebreaker Mackinaw on fairwell tour
« on: April 15, 2006, 04:04:58 PM »
The World War II era U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Mackinaw
(WAGB-83) is currently in Toledo, Ohio on its fairwell tour before decommissioning in June, 2006.  Perhaps the most respected vessel currently in operation on North America's Great Lakes, the Mackinaw was built in 1944 and has been an ice breaking institution over its 60+ year career.  It will be replaced this summer by a smaller vessel with the same name which is currently undergoing sea trials--although Great Lake ship enthusiasts agree that the Big Mack will never be replaced.

On Monday, April 15 the Mackinaw will visit Cleveland, Ohio.

Photo coverage of the Mackinaw's fairwell tour may be found at www.boatnerd.com in the "News Photo Gallery" section.
My blog with narrative and more photos is located at:

She will be missed for sure having been part of the Great Lakes shipping activity for so long.
I recall visiting her at Montreal during Expo 67. I think this is the first and only time she ever ventured out of the Lakes as she could only sail in fresh water.
