There is little or no direct relationship between net tonnage (NT) and deadweight cargo capacity (DWCC). Net tonnage is a dimensionless index calculated from the total moulded volume of the ship's cargo spaces by using a mathematical formula. Net tonnage is not a measure of the weight of the ship or its cargo, and should not be confused with terms such as deadweight tonnage or displacement.
It is, however, possible to relate dwcc to hold volume (ie

As BobS pointed out net tonnage is a volume measure based on 100 cft per Register ton. Gross tonnage measures the entire space of the ship, net tonnage only the cargo space or earning space of the ship. A cruiseship has a low DWT but high Register Tonnage vs an ore carrier with high DWT and relative low Register tonnage
