Topic 7: Watermarks
« on: September 23, 2015, 09:59:09 PM »
The site standard currently reads:

Quote
Watermarks can be added to photographs PROVIDED :-

1. They are reasonable in size. Photo Admins will advise if a watermark is too large and it will be expected that the member will reduce the size accordingly.

2. They are placed in the Top or Bottom Left or Right hand corner of the photograph.

3. No part of a Watermark should interfere/encroach upon the picture of the vessel.

Digital Watermarks are permitted. - QR Electronic Codes are not allowed.

Is it possible to be more specific about permitted size?

Should they be non-distracting?

Does this cover relevant new technologies?

What about watermarks that are small (just a simple text), barely visible, but placed at the ship's waterline or wake or near the ship, than in one of the corners?  Such ones can be overlooked easily unless you're attentive. Those who place watermarks like that do it so it would be harder to steal the photo, crop out the watermarks in the corners & reupload elsewhere as their own.

The problem there, Denis, is when you open up the image in full size, the watermark becomes a lot more noticeable. I'm not a fan of watermarks under any circumstances.

Me neither. However, I understand the reasoning why some photographers use them, so we can't just ban them alltogether.

Watermarks should be unobtrusive and non-distracting, preferably placed near the edge of the photo. They should not interfere or encroach upon the main subject of the photo.

Nobody loves watermarks, but there are good reasons to accept them.
