What Image Editing Program Do You Use?
« on: July 31, 2015, 08:30:44 AM »
Hi Everyone,

We're currently in the planning stages of creating some resources for members whom have had their images removed, to help get their images to meet site standards and get their photos back on site. This would be in the form of a short video tutorial covering a single topic such as how to straighten a horizon etc.

To make the videos as helpful as possible, multiple editing programs will be covered. We would like to know what photo editing program you use.

Any suggestions or ideas are welcome.

Best Regards
Cody

FREE and simple to use with brilliant results in adjusting photos ... Faststone Image Viewer http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm  I have Photoshop  but Faststone is quicker and results as good, if not better. (Photoshop has been kicked into touch)

For simple adjustments (straightening, exposure/shadow/contrast adjustment, sharpen, colour adjustmant) I use Photo Gallery that is included in Windows 12.  Not to pro standards, no doubt, but pretty good and easy to use  .

I am on Photoshop Elements 12 and find it easy enough to use. Have tried the "GIMP" its powerful and free but I found it not so easy.

Irfanview is a simple one for horizon etc and free of course and has been around for years.

best regards
Derek

ACDSee Pro 8. Not free, but not very expensive either.

And it is certainly a very good idea to help contributors with improving their shots, rather than simply delete them.

I use the free Picasa from https://picasa.google.com/

It is simple to use for straightening and cropping.  I usually try the results for Auto Contrast and/or Auto Colour, before sharpening.  Then I try I Feel Lucky and compare that with my best result.

Occasionally I use the Highlights and Shadows sliders.

To me this "manipulation" is an essential part of the fun of uploading to the site.

For my Photos I use `Photoscape`,free-ware and simple to use to enhance/straighten/resize etc..also Picassa 3..also free....
For my vids I use Magix Video Easy and Microsofts in-built movie maker..also I use a cheap program for video Stabilisation from `Muvee`...There is a lot of free-ware out there, and finding an easy to use interface program is the key..for me..

Exactly like Clyde said, the "manipulation" by Picasa is for me a very important part of uploading the photos on the site. :)

For elimination noise I use Neat Image: http://www.neatimage.com/download.html

And on a couple of occasions when I massively manipulated my photos, I have used basic MS Photo Editor.

Of course, Faststone for basic adjustments and resizing.

I like the idea to guide members via video and share tips from spotters experiences with different photo editing programs.
I use Lightroom 3.6 64 bits with, as I think, good results, but only the basic settings and adjustments and the sharpening-effect.
I took me some time to get used to the program since it differs quite a lot from the older adobe photoshop I worked with before. However, in my opinion the results I achieved with Lightroom beat the ones I managed to get with photoshop (7.0).

Regards, David

I use Jasc Paint Shop Pro Studio.  The features I commonly use are clarify, sharpen, crop and resize and occasionally colour and contrast balancing. I can sometimes be lucky with "one step photo fix" but more often than not it produces unrealistic colours. The trick of course is not to overdo any manipulation and get the right balance, e.g. between brightness and contrast.
