What's hanging off the stern?
« on: July 13, 2015, 03:26:44 PM »
Hello,

I'm including a photograph of a vessel with something hanging off of it's stern. But what is it? Could it be a Walker log? Or an unsecured mooring line or perhaps something a little more dubious?

Kind regards,

Looks more like the bow to me rather than the 'stern'!

The photo is greatly enlarged, you'll need to scroll over to the right to see the line he means off the stern.

When I started to work on a ship in 1964 we had no washing machine on board, to clean our blue jeans we tied them to a heaving line and towed them behind us at a speed of 10 kn about 1 or 2 hours, after that they were clean.

Greatly enlarged that's an understatement but thanks for pointing it out as I would never have known otherwise.

@ Juergen

I thought the same,, for a fishing line it looks a little much rope.  heaving line,,could be,,but doubt it. First 2 years of my sailing on small coasters 75/76 we did not have washing machines neither. This was the way to wash working clothes,,the more delicate were done by hand.
NOW!!!,,,if we could get rid of the sailors,,how safe shipping would be !!!!!!!!
