Her sistership, HMCS Preserver (AOR510), is being used as a fueling barge here in Halifax. Not sure when her 'official' retirement will take place. - Tom

Being unable to make any more sea voyages, HMCS Preserver's duties are now reduced to being a glorified fuel barge. She'll probably be officially retired in 2015.
With replacement vessels for HMCS Protecteur and HMCS Preserver still a long time in the future, this leaves our once so proud navy truely in shambles..... Pity...

A sad loss, but it was already well past time for them to be replaced.
Here is perhaps the last photo of Protecteur under her own power: http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=1957148
And a couple of her departing Pearl Harbor on her last voyage under tow: http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2034623

Perhaps the RCN will charter or borrow a US (MSC) Oiler until the new ships are completed?

It will certainly be interesting to learn what RCN will use for the next 4-5 years.

AFAIK, Canada still has reciprocal fueling agreements with the UK and the US. We'll fuel from their replenishment ships at sea, and their ships might be stopping at Halifax more frequently to take on fuel, assuming Preserver is kept around as a 'glorified fuel barge' (Perfect description, Dirk). - Tom

Davie shipyard is waiting for an answer from the RCN has they are proposing a temporary solution.  The yard proposed to converted a container ship into a refueling ship that they would likely rent to the RCN.

@davidship,

sorry for that. But the local news here talk more about converting a container ship rather than a commercial tanker, that's why i said that.

Sometime, those who wrote in newspapers don't know much about ship...
