Aboard Sailing Barge Victor in January!
« on: January 17, 2015, 12:46:58 PM »
A few weeks ago, I was talking to Wes Westwood, skipper and owner of the Thames Sailing Barge Victor, built in 1895, and currently residing alongside at the quay right next to ABP Ipswich's office at the old Customs House, on the Wet Dock.

He suggested that I might like to come aboard and follow the barge through her year in 2015, and so I've started, my first trip being a motor up the River Stour from Harwich to Mistley Quay and back again with a group of RSPB birdwatchers, followed by a run up the River Orwell to her home port of Ipswich.

Well, because I'm a film-maker, I of course filmed it for Shipping TV. The trip video is in 3 parts, and the first part is now on this site's video page. I hope I'm allowed to say where it is on this site, so you can see it easily:

I'll add a little reply when I add a new instalment to this film series.

Hope you like it!

New Shipping TV video - part 2 of our "A Year Afloat with Victor" series - in the second part of our film recorded on 14th January 2015, Sailing Barge Victor is sailing up the River Stour with an enthusiastic bunch of RSPB birdwatchers. We also see some quality barge-handling from Skipper Wes Westwood:

The video trip report is on this site's video page.

New - part 3 of "A Year Afloat with Victor" on a Thames sailing barge - in this installment we're sailing up the River Orwell, entering the Ipswich Wet Dock, and coming alongside on Victor's home berth:

The video report on this trip is on this site's video page.

I'll be back with SB Victor in a couple of weeks.

Hope you've enjoyed this trip report.

I note that Ken Smith has now deleted the specific links to video clips of this trip, which were actually on the site's video page, so it seems a bit odd to me!

However, if you go to this site's video page, and enter "sailing barge victor" into the search box, they'll all pop up.

New - part 4 of "A Year Afloat with Victor" on a Thames sailing barge - in this installment, we're crossing Ipswich Wet Dock with Queen Elizabeth as the ship's Royal Guest - and very lovely and regal she is, too!

Just go to this site's video page, and enter "sailing barge victor" into the search box, they'll all pop up.

At sea: there's a new video clip on the site's video page today, filmed at sea on the 31st January as we motored down the Essex coast towards the River Blackwater and Maldon, where Sailing Barge Victor is due to go into the dry dock.

My goodness, it was cold!

Just enter the words "Sailing Barge Victor" into the video page serach to find all the video clips!

Glad  you like it - I'm having a great time making it, and I hope everyone who is watching is enjoying it too

Part 6 of the series from aboard Sailing Barge Victor is now online and on this site's video page - sailing further up the River Blackwater, heading for this year's dry docking - but there was something of a hitch!

As ever, the key phrase "Sailing Barge Victor" will find the episodes.

Part 7 already!

Here's part 7 of "A year with Victor - its a shorter episode with Victor being secured in the dry dock, and a brief look at Hythe Quay, Maldon.

As ever, the key phrase "Sailing Barge Victor" will find the episodes.

Next time we'll be getting underneath the hull - hope its all okay, for a 120 year-old wooden ship!

A great series of videos Chris. Very interesting to see the George Smeed with a mast, I have seen her in Maldon over many years, decades even, and never with a mast. Time for another visit  :)

Regards

Bob
