Norman Atlantic rescue
« on: December 28, 2014, 07:37:38 AM »
A car ferry with 466 passengers and crew caught fire while sailing from Greece to Italy.
The Captan asked for evacuation.

The Norman Atlantic, IMO 9435466, built 2009, sailing from Patras in western Greece to the Italian port of Ancona, was 33 nautical miles off the island of Othonoi when it sent a distress signal, Greek coast guard officials said.
I wish all return home safe and sound!

S&R operations are underway.

They are being covered live by Rai News. Latest reports mention 110 passengers taken to safety so far, and that fire in deck 5 is now under control. 3 tugs dispatched to the area and now attempting to tow the vessel to the nearest Italian port.

The German Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation has taken action to investigate the serious marine casualty on board the ro-pax-ferry NORMAN ATLANTIC, as two german subjects among the victims of the ferry-blaze.

In this context please note that the Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation meanwhile has published the final report:

Fire on the ro-ro passenger vessel LISCO GLORIA on 8 October 2010 north-west of Fehmarn

http://www.bsu-bund.de/SharedDocs/pdf/EN/Investigation_Report/2012/Investigation_Report_445_10.pdf?__blob=publicationFile

LISCO GLORIA was a ropax-ferry, very similar to NORMAN ATLANTIC.
