Simushir IMO 9179385 adrift off Haida Gwaii, Canada

Russian vessel Simushir, IMO 9179385 en route from Washington State to Russia lost power around 11 pm October 15 approx. 25 km off Tasu, Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte Islands, Canada. In high seas and heavy wind, vessel is drifting ashore.
An US-registered tug, which left Prince Rupert, BC is not expected to reach stricken vessel until the morning of October 17.

Since the information the BBC is reporting was provided, the tugboat BARBARA FOSS has gotten a line aboard the SIMUSHIR and is towing it north at 5 knots, eventually bound for Prince Rupert, BC.

Earlier a Canadian Armed Forces helicopter from 442 Sqn. Comox, BC had airlifted the vessel's injured master.
CCGS Gordon Reid had also attempted to tow the freighter away from the Haida Gwaii coast; but all attached lines eventually snapped in the heavy seas.

Simushir under tow of tug Smit Mississippi and tug Smit Humber, heading Port Rupert with a speed of 7,6 kn.

Prince Rupert Port @rupertport

Cargo vessel #Simushir berthed safely at Fairview Container Terminal. Ship at adjacent berth continues loading: no interruption to business.
