Maersk Line Vessel Capacities
« on: March 13, 2006, 08:23:36 PM »
During a meeting with the head of Maersk Line's Western Operation Centre the question of why, when compared to other container shipping companies, do Maersk Line state their vessel capacities as much lower than other similar sized vessels as operated by other lines.

The official line on this is that Maersk only state the number of full containers their vessels can carry (based on a homogenous weight of 14 tons) without adversely affecting the stability. Other lines state the TEU of their ships based on the number of empty units a ship can carry. Therefore this does not accurately reflect the actual cargo carrying capability of the vessel. It's pointless saying that your ship can carry 10,000 teu if you can't actually carry any cargo within that.

Another point to note is that Maersk also state the carrying capacity based on the service the vessel is currently operating. For example, if the Gjertrud Maersk was running a service that carried a lot of 20ft units in excess of 30 tons then her capacity would be reduced accordingly because she simply could not lift 7500 teu at 30 tons each. So, as far as Maersk are concerned the useable capacity of any given ship has some fluidity to it.

Given the number of threads on this subject over the past few months I thought people would find this interesting......but no, I won't be drawn on the empty TEU capacity of the G-Types.
