Flag confusion
« on: May 31, 2014, 07:31:25 PM »
This week I saw the Cunard liner Queen Victoria in my home of Liverpool. The ship is registered in Bermuda, but she was flying a United Kingdom red ensign from her stern.

Could anyone tell me why she was not flying the Bermuda flag? Is it because Bermuda is under influence of the United Kingdom?

I too noticed this on a recent photo somewhere in the Med.
Bermuda has its own flag. It strikes me the company doesn't want to abide by UK rules (so they re-flagged all the Queens) but they would like the protection of the Red Duster!
Hypocritical or what!

Flags have never been Cunard's strong point. I went on a Norwegian Fjord cruise aboard Queen Mary 2 in 2010, and instead of flying the Norwegian courtesy flag, they flew the Icelandic one!!!

Could be as simple as 2nd register ,,homeport outside the country and the flag of UK. All over the world it,s done. Comes down to lower salaries, not needed UK sailors and those foreign sailors aboard are not falling under the UK tax/Social Security laws, in other words CHEAPER
NOW!!!,,,if we could get rid of the sailors,,how safe shipping would be !!!!!!!!

Hi there!
A simple thing - according to the respective flag regulations ships registred in the Bermuda ship registry are considered as "british" and are entitled to fly the undefaced UK Red Ensign.

Find further info at:

In the UK possibly Southampton. I wouldnt go to Liverpool - not much sunshine and the ships are pretty small!!
Rotterdam might offer nightlife as well as fab shipping - Hoek of Holland or Massvalakte for sunbathing.
Gibralter might also be an option for ships and sunshine?
