Britain's morning was thrown into disarray today when the ever-reliable shipping forecast failed to air, BBC 4 radio due to a technical glitch failed to air the forecast since 1924.

Listeners quickly took to Twitter to express their bewilderment at the mix-up, with some left thinking they had woken up at the wrong time.  ;D

"Sailing By" is such a soothing piece of work.

During my years living and working in the UK I used to listen to the Forecast regularly. Even after my return to Germany I am still listening to it via the web sometimes. Have you read Charlie Connelly's excellent book, "Attention All Shipping"?

I'm sure there are some who missed it, but it's not much of a loss as the Shipping Forecast is pretty rubbish these days. The Met office seemed to be scared of there own shadows and over predict way to often. There are better, much more accurate predictions out there and they are very easy to access 24/7 with modern technology.
