Silly question, but I imagine that there is a reason why some operators rename vessels sold for breaking and others do not. Can anyone explain the logic, please?

When an owner sails a vessel to a facility by themselves, they do retain the original name. When a 'cash buyer' buys a vessel 'as is / where is' and need to arrange repositioning to a scrapyard, they will usually have to change the name (as per the majority of relevant 'sale and purchase' contracts).

On a fun note, just to avoid the hassle (in repainting etc etc), such buyers will usually choose an anagram of the older name (eg a vessel called the 'adventure' would become the 'venture' or delete an owner-specific prefix (for example "Maersk xyz" will become the 'xyz')
