On March 5th, the ex-USS RANGER (CV-61), a conventional supercarrier of the Forrestal-class commissioned in 1957 and decommissioned in 1993, departed Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington under town of the tugboat CROSBY LEADER (IMO 7417288), to be towed around Cape Horn and scrapped at Brownsville, Texas. The voyage is estimated to take 5 months.

Several attempts were made to save RANGER as a museum, but all endeavors at preserving the ship best known for starring in the movie Top Gun failed.

Interestingly, HANJIN LOS ANGELES (IMO 9128130), which was supposedly reported as being sold for scrap way back in May of last year, has been moored at the Port of Seattle today, still quite active.

I guess it goes to show, until the ship actually shows up on the beach, you have to take some scrapping reports with a grain of salt. I'm sure this particular example will wind up there sooner than later, but it is interesting to see it's still alive almost a year later.

Kyle, being sold for scrap today does not mean being scrapped tomorrow....there could ver well be a delivery time stipulated in the sale contract. And if this particular ship is in Seattle it is likely that it will return to the Far-East with cargo, discharge and then head for the scrapping location.

Dave, please look at the times when the first generation of VLCC's went to scrapyard, often less than ten years old. It is all a matter of supply and demand.

Hi Kyle,

Hanjin Los Angeles is not yet sold. Demolition reports indentified the wrong Hanjin vessel when Hanjin sold several old containerships for scrapping last year.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the clarification. I found it odd that 15 of Hanjin's vessels were listed as sold, and most were scrapped shortly there after, but four of them are still sailing a year later. I'd guessed either someone reneged on the sale, or there was a screw-up in the info. Thanks for passing on that it was the latter.

Regardless, those four, HANJIN LOS ANGELES, HANJIN PARIS, HANJIN ROME and HANJIN MARSEILLES are now the veterans of the fleet. I suppose it won't be long before they're gone as well, so best to get pictures of a visiting one while I can.

Kind Regards, Kyle

Hi Kyle,

There was a lot of confusion and It's possible that Hanjin Los Angeles wasn't the only Hanjin ship to be wrongly identified amongst those sold for scrap.

It happens, unfortunately it's the nature of the shipping business.
