Hansa Constitution Runs Aground Off Hong Kong Island Coast
« on: April 07, 2014, 06:34:59 AM »
German container ship Hansa Constitution ran aground off the coast of Hong Kong as monsoon winds caused rough seas.

There was no water on the ship and no environmental damage was caused. No reports of casualties and no danger of the vessel sinking was reported. DETAILS

There may have been a quite strong monsoon but this area was protected and the seas were no more than very slight. Lets get it right. The grounding appeared to be almost managed with the starboard anchor acting as a kedge swinging the bow to stb and the vessel grounded at its forefoot of the bulbous bow. It looked very controlled and the anchor cable was being eased back as it grounded. (It did not sound as if it was jumping over the gypsy which it would do if uncontrolled and in gear.) It may have lost main engine and then steerage, possibly generators werent affected as it seemed as if the bow thruster was operating.

It seems to me in the first video that the engine is attempted to start, right in the beginning of the video one can see a white speck on the water behind the ship, looks like the propeller started and stopped again. After that, one can not see any propeller water anymore until the end. The stb anchor was seemingly dropped but for that you don,t need a winch. The anchors should have been ready for use in the port vicinity anyhow. Question is Total black-out?, which of course nowadays also shuts down the main engine.

An Atlantic Container Line ship suffered a total blackout entering Halifax years ago. The ship grounded (gently) on the Dartmouth side of the harbour. I've also seen this type of failure happen to warships. A ship proceeding at a slow speed as you'd expect in harbour doesn't take much time/distance to slow to a stop. - Tom

The third video starts earliest, and appears to show the ship almost stationary at the beginning, then it seems to accelerate towards the shore, with some signs of propeller thrust.
The second distinctly shows the engine running in reverse trying to back the ship off, which seems an unwise move in case she is holed.
The first showing the starboard anchor chain apparently freely paying out, which was not going to provide much stopping power.

No quick water seen on stern..Looks like the ship had no power,  Nothing louder than when a ship blacks out .

@ Vincent
in the first vid in the second post is in the beginning a white speck in the water,,which looks like a starting and stopping prop.

In the last vid posted seems more voices in the background and phones,,but not radio communication of the ship. Would be also unlikely,,how peoples ashore have radios on that frequencies/channels and beside that, the ships name or any other name of any station is never said,, very unlikely radio traffic for this incident
