U.S. Navy to reassign two subs from Conn to Washington
« on: February 28, 2006, 10:57:33 PM »
The U.S. Navy has announced plans to reassign two Seawolf class fast-attack submarines from Groton, Connecticut to the Puget Sound area of Washington on the Pacific coast. The USS Seawolf and the USS Connecticut will be based at Naval Base Kitsap. The two submarines will join the 3rd Seawolf class submarine, USS Carter, already based in Washington.  The move to the Pacific Coast is expected to take place in July or August, 2007.  Currently 17 fast attack submarines are based at Groton and the Navy has kept approximately an equal number of subs on each coast but is realigning its submarine fleet to reflect increased concern about the security of the Pacific Ocean.  Also, a third submarine will be reassigned to San Diego, California in 2-3 years.

The three Seawolf Class submarines were built between 1997 and 1998 for a price of $2.5 billion each.  The subs are reputed to be the quietiest in the world and have the capability of diving deep.
