Radioactive leak at Halifax shipping yard
« on: March 14, 2014, 08:01:56 AM »
There occurred an accident at Halifax shipping yard where a container carrying radioactive material leaked as it fell from more than 15 metres from a crane onto the deck while it was moved from a ship to the dock.

This Site claims that the officials are treating the situation as a radioactive leak, where as this other Site says there is no leak of radioactive material at Halifax port.

There are no injuries or contamination noted as of now and let us hope it stays that way.

There seems to have been an over reaction to this event. Many errors have crept into reports, including: the name of the terminal was incorrect, the height of the drop was "converted" from 20 feet to 20 meters, but worst of all that there was a leak of radioactive material.

There was no leak. Workers were tested, founded to be clean and sent home as a precaution. The Fairview Cove container terminal operated by Cerescorp was shut down as a standard emergency response precaution until nuclear experts were brought in. A container was dropped 20 feet and an area around it was closed off until it could be removed.

The terminal resumed normal operations on March 15 at 0800 ADT.

There were some balanced and informative reports, which I have tried to summarize in my blog "Shipfax", and some totally irresponsible ones.

I believe it will be as safe as it ever was, but we are calling in some experts to verify. Their tests will be long and rigorous and may result in a depletion of stock available for public consumption.
In the meantime, for your own safety, please come no closer than New York until the all clear is sounded.

Would be a pity if the "booz" is limited,, but then topped with nuclear glow it might have the extra twist !!!
NOW!!!,,,if we could get rid of the sailors,,how safe shipping would be !!!!!!!!

The container is simply a lifting/stacking platform for the storage vessels which house the stored material.I have witnessed test drops of similar, empty, vessels while working at Ontario Hydro. After repeated drops from higher points the vessels reportedly performed fine. The vessels are of course very heavy.Possibly the container capacity is an issue. How often do containers actually fall from cranes?

i was told container falls happen once every 200000 moves.
that said the other terminal in halifax had a container drop and roll a truck. Apparently one of the twistlocks failed.
