Between 200 - 300 boxes is the figure I've got, too, Alan, from another source.

Not sure that I would wish to be proceeding at speed across the Bay of Biscay at the moment.

The second photo is not M/V Svendborg Maersk, but Cosco Nagoya, taken after rough sea in the northern atlantic, at the end of last year.

The talk is of 200-300 list containers. Vessel heeled up to 40 degrees and is in Malaga for repairs now.

The estimate of 200-300 containers is correct and makes this the most significant loss of containers overboard in stormy conditions.

Even on a vessel of this size i wouldnt have liked to be onboard at the time.

The Courtesy of Seatrade Global quote is a quote from www.maerskline.com.
... and in this ML-press release the most important piece of news is that "the
crew is safe and accounted for".

Lost containers from Svendborg Maersk up to 520!

Given that boxes can take anything up to 18 months to sink, depending on the state of their seals, and that while afloat they tend to be low in the water, this kind of loss presents a very considerable risk to especially small ships and pleasure craft.

This'll be the second nine high stacked vessel to loose boxes this year.

Both the Maersk Stepnica and Svendborg Maersk have had their accomodation raised several decks to stow nine high on deck, yet neither have had their lashing brisges raised to meet the higher stacks. Thus, instead of three rows of containers just relying on twistlocks you now have six.

Good point - I just had a look back at the footage I shot of Stepnica, and the accomodation is certainly higher than it was. The shots certainly show the forward boxes stacked 6 high, and the aft boxes 5 high above the last lashing bar connection.

It's interesting to note that the boxes from Svendborg were empty - wouldn't loaded boxes be even more likely to go over in similar conditions?

Some good images of Svendborg Maersk in Malaga by Manuel Fernandez and Franela have been uploaded to the photo section.
