 Think you're right in that the definition should be of first importance;
Legal and complex in  determining that the ship or ships is at the origin or a casualty of some other event. There is one here that might not accounted as a real shipping tragedy.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halifax_Explosion

That's right Jean, the exlosion of the 'Mont-Blanc' was definitely a disaster but of course not confined to an individual ship. By the way, the Halifax-explosion is also described in detail in the 'Dictionary of Disasters at Sea During the Age of Steam' Under the keyword 'Mont-Blanc'.
