Seem that CCGS Pierre Radisson is heading to the area, the 3rd icebreaker to work this ice jam.  I heard pilot discussion that says that water level is 1 meter higher on the west side of the ice field. Sorel Harbour was open water today but the big problem is between between Lanoraie and Tracy.

Looks like this is going to be one of those winters where icebreakers will be working full-out! Is there any information that anyone can share about how they work an ice jam? I recall from my own long-ago days on the CCGS Labrador that we had to deal with something called Batture Floes that developed around this area. As I recall, they were very difficult things to work with.

In order to help with ice circulation they use ice boom to keep some ice floe close to the shore. With the temperature around -30

The hovercraft MAMILOSSA is out and working to help moving the ice in lac St-Pierre. She is a fine and well managed ship for that kind of job. Cheers to the crew.

The Amundsen is near Pte-aux-Trembles assisting the tug Ocean Ross  Gaudrault.  The tug is stock in the ice and I believe she was out to assist the Thalassa Desgagn

I am wondering if anyone knows what's going on with the icebreakers. There is only two icebreakers out in Newfoundland. They have the Teleost breaking ice on the Northeast coast, and she's no icebreaker.

thanks for the update M. Giroux,

the heavy ice seem to be at the end of lac St-Pierre now, the ferry also seem to move. The icebreakers are probably close to win this fight!
