SIRIUS - ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT HER?
« on: December 08, 2013, 01:03:22 PM »
Hi All.

This ship has been mentioned on the site before but I am not sure that anyone has really identified her.

Currently named Sirius I photographed her in Bembridge on the Isle Of Wight a couple of months ago.

From her hull construction she looks to be of some age.

To me she looks like an old salvage vessel but her prow might be a later addition to her hull.

Its unusual to find a ship that no one seems to know the basics about - particularly for what seems to be an older vessel.

If someone can help ID her that would be great.

Regards

Steve

Just wondering if she was one of the old "British Road Service Ltd" vessels that used to operate between Cowes & the mainland. Think some of them had a similar hull shape (without the boom & mast of course.

Regards

Bob

I had wondered whether she was ex-Admiralty dockyard (she doesn't really match the former BRS barges), and have asked around.  Apparently she has a builders plate of J S Watson, Gainsborough, though without yard number or year.  Philip Simons and George Robinson have looked into this and reached the view that she is the former KLCB No.7, built in 1939 for the King

Following some research which basically involved getting in touch with the owners I have now found out more about the above vessel.

As noted below tThe vessel was built by J.S Watson, Gainsborough on the River Trent in
1939, her yard number was 1512, and she was measured as 84grt, 48nrt, 72ft x
22ft. O.N. 166890

She was built on behalf of the Kings Lynn Conservancy Board and was named

Oceanic Sirius is an advanced seismographic research vessel built by Ulstein Verft shipyard. She was delivered in October 2011.

I was going through some old albums and I found an image of Sirius as KLBC No 7. It was taken around 1982/3.
