They say they are not closing the yard, just decommissioning some cranes.
A likley story, if you get rid of cranes how are you going to build ships, cranes are a very integeral part of any shipyard, no matter how big or small.
Time i think someone grew a set of b**ls and came clean, and tell the workers and the public just what is going on.

They say they are replacing "old" cranes with mobile cranes!
Mobile, meaning they can be moved somewhere else when  not needed.

Now , not getting to political , I blame the Scottish National Party's policy of independence for the whole thing. The MOD have given the Clyde and it's highly skilled workforce thousands of tonnage of Grey Funnel Line to built including all six of the Type 45's...or have you all have short memories. The new Type 26 Frigate designs are well under way and the Clyde should get more than their fair share of building them... unless The SNP leadership and cohorts get their own way and the people of Scotland are taken in by their hollow promises and vote Yes. There will then be no navy ships to build and thousands of jobs would be kyboshed.

Well put Dave, and dont forget sizable chunks of the new Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier.
I've not been a big fan of independance. Not so simple as closing the border and Willim Wallace waving his sword at the English, oop sorry Alex Salmond flag waving and bringing us to our knees.
Have to stop there otherwise it will start to sound political, and we would'nt want that

Not being political but being cynical why did they dump nuclear test facility at Douneray, and Polaris, etc etc at Faslane, USA Polaris base at Holy Loch. Could it just be coincidental that they are  quite a few miles from London?

Well as long as we're NOT being Political..
You drew a big border in Ireland..And you never thought twice about it.
So, Enjoy..With many happy Returns.

The SNp are committed to building a Scottish Navy..

Perhaps you can explain why the RFA are building their new tankers in Korea.

So, blame the BRITISH government..If these yards close.

Alex Salmond didn't ask  for tankers to be built in Korea.
Seems to have slipped your minds.

Whilst you were "not being political".

Not sure if the placing of many nuclear sites around Scotland was political, more economical. And if you look closely there are quite a few around England as well. As for the distance from London, if conflict does happen you can be rest assured that one of the biggest warheads will be squarely aimed at the UK seat of government, which is oops, London

ozzy76-- I did'nt draw any border in Ireland
Scotland did'nt draw a border in Ireland
The UK government of the time(of which Scotland played little part) drew that border.
The SNP may be committed to building a Navy, but without countless millions, it may be built of matchsticks.
Tankers for the RFA being built in Korea for financial reasons, as quoted earlier build them where it cheapest.
And your right, it is the British government that are responsible, and Alex Salmond had no say in the matter where these vessels would be built.
So all in all it never slipped my mind, cos it does'nt bother me.
         Ahhhh politics ehh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They say that, but if experience has taught us anything is that BAE and their ilk can and will change their mind at the drop of a hat.

It has been announced by the MOD that a contract for three Royal Navy OPV's has been brought forward to fill the gap between the end of the carriers construction and the Type 26's and the two yards on the Clyde will not close. Could the SNP ever promise anything like this?..very doubtful.

On the flip side, they might not have got into the kind of totally one sided contract HM Govt has got into with BAE which actually requires us to build warships for the sake of it in order to try and balance the books.
Restricting the BAE yards to tender for UK Govt contracts only is ridiculous, and will, in the long term, lead to the destruction of the industry entirely.
