CCGS Tracy on sale?
« on: August 29, 2013, 05:02:19 PM »
I learned that sailing days of the CCGS Tracy are over.  The ship is currently tied up at Precott Ontario waiting, probably to going to be on sale soon. It's weird, because it ad a major refit few year ago at Verreault ship yard.  We will miss this regular ship that we saw so often on the St-Laurence River.

This is from the government web site. Was this work done? If so the vessel was supposed to remain in service for at least ten years after the refit. ???

Here is the explanation why this happened. Sorry, it's a french article.

http://www.lapresse.ca/le-soleil/actualites/politique/201205/20/01-4527025-coupes-a-peches-et-oceans-canada-des-francophones-inquiets.php

To resume, it is said the there will be job lost in the coast-guard and that include job cut of the ccgs tracy crew.

This may be a good ship to be converted into a museum, the ship is in good shape.  Will see what happened next.

Cheers
Daniel

This from the following blog Sunday, September 8, 2013:

Ship Movements at St. John's and other ports in Newfoundland

"VOCM is reporting that the CCGS Sir Wilfred Grenfell has been taken out of service. The ship entered cold lay-up last Monday, the crew taken off, spare parts removed, the ship will be out until next April.
Local activist and former Coast Guard employee Merv Wiseman, in his experience, once this happens to a ship they never return to service.

This is another case of the Federal Government downgrading Search & Rescue service in Newfoundland and Labrador, in my opinion and this will continue to endanger the people who make their living from the sea "

This editorial from Nunatsiaq News. It looks like there is more concern for the state of the Coast Guard...

After an unusual summer that featured fog, rain, heavy ice and unpredictable winds throughout much of the Eastern Arctic, many Nunavut residents likely came to appreciate the valuable and sometimes life-essential work of the Canadian Coast Guard, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
