Question concerning beam length on the Great Lakes
« on: July 17, 2013, 12:36:46 PM »
Does anybody have the answer to the following question?

I have a question: What is the MAX permitted beam of the salties
passing through the Seaway & Welland canal locks?

Nowhere I can find that information....

I noticed the heavy lift US flagged Maersk Illinois & Texas have 23 mtr and they visited Milwaukee, so they have cleared all
the locks without any problem.

Also noticed several Federal Bulkers with a beam of 27 mtrs, but
not so sure they go all the way up to CHI/Milwaukee area..

Thank you for your assistance.

On the St Lawrence Seaway webpage I found a 76 foot limit which in 1993 was extended to 78 feet or 23.8 meters for "wide beam ships".

I might need to lose a little weight before I can squeeze through on my inner tube.

My blog with narrative and more photos is located at:

read the introduction and also there are about 5 different blogs of ships and railroads

The maximum beam permitted to transit the Seaway and Welland Canal locks is 28.5 meters (93.5 feet). To get more information you can also visit a Youtube channel where I upload videos about it. Before uploading, I do some editing to make the video perfect. For this, I used inshot pro. In this mod, you will find lot of new features which are not available in others mods.
