An interesting and somewhat concerning viewpoint that takes this story to the next stage:

Shipmanagement Company, Leonhardt & Blumberg, report that all 17 crew of her container vessel "Hansa Brandenburg" have safely arrived in Port Louis, Mauritius on board of the "Donau Trader". On July 15, whilst en route from Singapore to Durban, one of the containers on board the "Hansa Brandenburg" caught fire about 200 nautical miles northeast of Mauritius. Immediately after the incident the crew of the "Hansa Brandenburg" notified the authorities. Crew of the "Hansa Brandenburg" did not have a chance to extinguish the fire on the vessel and could fortunately be safely rescued by the attending ship "Donau Trader". Leonhardt & Blumberg are delighted their valued seafarers have come through the ordeal unharmed and would like to express their sincere thanks to the crew of Hansa Brandenburg. Representatives of Leonhardt & Blumberg are due to arrive in Port Louis tomorrow to attend to the crew. The "Hansa Brandenburg" is currently adrift some 200 nautical miles northeast of Mauritius still suffering from the fire. Meanwhile the Mauritian Authorities and National Coast Guard are monitoring the situation and coordinating any further action to mitigate any potential damage to the environment. The exact cause of the incident is yet unknown. A full investigation will be conducted.

on wonders,,or better one wonders not anymore.
Flaminia / E-class fire / E-class engine room water / MOL Comfort / MSC Nicola / This one/
the one which exploeded in front of the bridge , NSB ship? In the indian ocean 2 years or so ago, crew managed to extinguisch.
I don,t want to know what else happens what we never hear. I had a few close calls in my container time with leaking container, or one I remember got hot inside, wwe cooled it 1.5 days until arrival,, and so no.
I would say the dark is really dark in that area
Thanks god that I got off from container ships 5-6 years ago !!! They are by now more danderous than ant tanker !!!!!
NOW!!!,,,if we could get rid of the sailors,,how safe shipping would be !!!!!!!!

Well Capt. Ted, the thing is, you know exactly what you are carrying in a tanker, in a sealed box it could be anything inside.......

Stowage of IMDG cargo directly in front of the bridge is normally not allowed - at least as per our vessels' DoC - other cargo should not tend to self-ignition. Unfortunately misdeclaration of cargo is not that unusual....

Increasingly happens that those "smaller" box ships  receive orders too load more cargo than it is allowed. So they have to fill and use all possible space.

OF COURSE DR

also when on chemical tankers with different cargoes funny things happened already.
But those container ships getting really in the crossfire,, not the ships,,,but the container.
I remember once,, loading in RDM and we were 800 m/t over the draft we should be.
Weight is there always an issue. IMDG is always the second problem. Problem with IMDG is not only that not reported, but also for example the complexity of the IMDG code.
For example,, certain IMDG classes are not allowed to stowed beside a live reefer container,
even in opposite bays (distance ,if not abbuted,m between bays is usually 2.40 m or so.
So if the "hot" motor of the live reefer point to the end of the IMDG con 2.4 m away then it is not allowed,, however if I turnb the reefer around,, it is !!!
I was once called in the middle of the night from a young Chief Mate,,stowplan identified 92 conflicts... 89 of them were with involvement of dead reefers, not life one.  It is sometimes an impossible task. Most ontainer lines have good peo0ples in their ops department who make the stowplans, but some ,, I telling you,,the give a s..t on anything
important the cargo goes on
NOW!!!,,,if we could get rid of the sailors,,how safe shipping would be !!!!!!!!

SALVORS have brought the fire aboard the box ship Hansa Brandenburg under control, its ship manager said today.

Personnel from Five Oceans Salvage and Smit Salvage have boarded the vessel and are concentrating on the most-burned area, Leonhardt & Blumberg spokesman Cor Radings said in a statement. That area includes one of the cargo holds and the forepart of the accommodation block.

Firefighting specialists have also begun inspecting other parts of the vessel, said Radings, who added that salvors have carried out an initial survey for a towing connection.

No destination for repairs has been announced, but the closest ship such facilities are in Port Louis, Mauritius, about 200nm away. For more extensive repair work, ships are normally taken to South Africa.

Both Radings and the Mauritius National Coast Guard confirmed that no oil pollution has occurred. source IHS
