Complete Novice - VHF Scanning (Felixstowe)
« on: June 15, 2013, 04:55:46 PM »
Hi
I recently bought a caravan in Felixstowe in view of the busy shipping channels and am curious as to whether I can pick up the broadcasts which I have seen others doing in the popular viewpoint area, near the docks.
As a complete novice, I'm not sure what I need or how much to spend though have found some entry level VHF scanners on ebay for around

Hi Steve, although I no longer listen to any VHF channels, you should have no trouble at all, providing you have bought a half-decent, VHF scanning receiver.
Remember that all traffic that heads for Felixstowe, Ipswich, Harwich & Parkeston Quay passes through **Harwich Haven** and this is reflected in the traffic control being controlled by Harwich VTS.

All the channels you might ever need for marine scanning are here (scroll down to pages 5 & 6 for relevant local stations.) :-

&
A bit more detail for Harwich pilots and their VHF:-

& finally, here are the ACTUAL frquencies you will need to programme into your receiver:-

Maybe the caravan site has free wi-fi, in which case, you can also keep watch from the comfort of your caravan to see what ship movements are occurring, or about to take place:-

If you have not used Marine Traffic before, just take your time to explore around and narrow it down to what you require.

Good hunting.
Regards, Rick
