The BBC web site now has some pictures. I hadn't realised, the entire 50m tall tower was completely demolished.

Apparently she had two tugs with her as well, but for some reason they weren't able to take control of the ship; isn't that why they were escorting her, to take control if something went wrong??

According to BBC report, the captain said that both engines died and he lost control of the ship.  I wonder how much time passed between the engines stopping and the crash??  Maybe there wasn't enough time for the tugs to know what the situation was...

Either way, that's sure an awful result...

It's difficult to believe how this could happen especially with a Harbour Pilot(s)on board and most media reports suggesting that there were 2 escorting tugs . . However the AIS tracks only show a stern tug escort 'GENUA' (IMO 91637380) unless of course there was another bow tug without AIS, which is doubtful.
Its all very sad and condolences go out to the bereaved families.

Main engine failure is reported, either immediately before or during the turn. If that's the case, it's not surprising the tugs struggled to hold her in such restricted waters.

Aerial view on the fully collapsed harbour building plus tower.

To be compared with this photo showing the building before accident happened:

My opinion: Bad quality of building.

A strange and premature opinion, given that the tower was hit by a giant container ship. Less speculation - more waiting for the facts...

@ Barry: The building was grounded on max. 20 concrete pillars. Without any basement. The tower existed of max. 20 circular concrete elements. See the rubble of the collapsed building and tower and you may see the unstable "construction".

Well, she's not exactly a giant container ship, she's a rather modest sized one, judging from a couple of photos that I've seen of her...

However, in retrospect (with full 20/20 hindsight)... given that large ships are moored at a dock right next to the tower, it seems like it might have been wise to build a barrier around the building to protect against such events such as this (especially given the tight quarters... looking at the satellite image of that bay, and seeing that one could barely turn a ship around at the opening by that tower... it's very scary looking!!)

Like all ships more than 220 meters entering Sampierdarena Wharfes the Jolly Nero was moored bow to northwest at the terminal Messina. The departure manouvre consists of a backway for about 1,5 miles with the assistance of one or two tugs and the evolution anticlockwise in front of the demolished pilots and vts tower! Engine failure and bad luck!

Hi,

A strange and premature opinion, given that the tower was hit by a giant container ship. Less speculation - more waiting for the facts...

Exactly, if a tower of that type is hit in the side it's no surpise that he collapsed. I don't think that the designer was thinking of the chance of an collision with a ship.
And building towers with concrete rings is nothing unusual.

@Davy; your link took me to a collector page with a bunch of page options, rather than the event-specific page that I think you were hoping to post...

Of course, since I can't read Italian, I couldn't go any further from there!
