Apparently, authorities in Norway are considering building a tunnel for ships:

Now that would be interesting!

„ADOLPHUS DUX NASSOVIAE MONTIS JUGUM PERFOSSUM NAVIBUS APERUIT A.D. MDCCCXLVII“

Sorry, but BBC is wrong. Built from 1844 to 1847 the "Weilburg shipping tunnel" at the river Lahn was the first and now the only one (in Germany). He is 195 m long and 5,60 m wide and still in use.

More (in german language): https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weilburger_Schifffahrtstunnel

Peter, I think if you look at the dimensions that the BBC quote it will be the first tunnel of that size to accommodate 16,000 tonne ships ?

Cheers,

Dan.

The Norwegian tunnel is somewhat larger than the Weilburger tunnel - that's really just a Freycinet gauge barge size tunnel - a bit wider and a bit shallower . . . .

I'd love to go through the Stad tunnel . . if they build it!
