Yes, Atlantic Star has been sold for scrap and has left her lay up berth, under tow, for Alang. She has been renamed Antic for this final voyage. I wonder how long it will take. A week next Friday I shall be in the Red Sea, it would be interesting to encounter her on this last voyage. Especially as I have never actually seen this ship before.

There are a number of photos on the Marine Marchande (French language) web site, dated March 19 and 20.
http://www.marine-marchande.net/Jourlejour2/AujourleJour-348.htm should get you on the right page if your French is a bit rusty.

Hi Clive,

on the French website it says:

"She has definitively left Marseille with the assistance of Mistral 7 and 8 after three years of lay-up (...) At the moment she's underway to Port Said, but her final destination will be Jeddah where she will serve as a floating hotel which sounds consistent knowing that her machinery is dated (?) and she is almost 30 years old (...)"

Further down in the article however it says:

(...) Floating hotel or the scrapyard, both is probable and the final decision maybe has not been made yet.

Do you know for sure she's on her way to Alang?

Cheers,
Jens

Jens
Thanks for posting the correction that the ship is in fact destined for Jeddah to become an accommodation ship.
In fact I had just logged on here to up date my previous posting when I saw that you had beaten me to it!
Ships have been known to re-emerge from similar such static roles to sail again but as Atlantic Star needs to be re-engined I don't really expect we'll ever see her sail again. After all, why would anyone invest such money in a ship that is in any event at the later stages of her career.

One and the same, I would expect, though I think that there have to be different arrangements for the canal transit.
