Hi David, the closest railway station is Southampton Central and from there you can get a free bus down to Town Quay, which is a decent vantage point (although a fence on the southern end makes it difficult to photograph ships coming in). From Town Quay you can get a ferry across to Hythe which gives a good opportunity for photographing anything in berths 38, 39 and 40 plus any ships in the Ocean Cruise terminal. Hythe Marina, the pier and Shore Road are good vantage points for stuff leaving and entering the docks, respectively, these are best after late morning. Back on the Southampton side, Mayflower Park is also a good spot and if there is a cruise ship in berth 101 then you'll get great shots, especially if they've put her in port side to, so the bow is facing you.

If you have time and the weather's good, then the Red Funnel vehicle ferry to East Cowes (crossing time of 55 minutes each way, foot passenger day return is

Hi David

For info on ship movements see http://www.southamptonvts.co.uk/Live_Information/Shipping_Movements_and_Cruise_Ship_Schedule/Planned_Movements/
Normally gives a few days forecast but time are not always that accurate.

Only one cruise ship scheduled for 16th April, P&O's AZURA sailing from Ocean Terminal at 16.30

Enjoy your trip

Regards

Bob

The Southampton Branch of the World Ship Society has some information on locations, too: http://www.sotonwss.org.uk/page9.html

And, if I may post it, on my own site I've included a page of photography positions: http://www.ship-photo.com/locations/locations-southampton-and-portsmouth/

An additional piece of info re Robert Smith's reply and the VTS shipping timetable. The times for tanker arrivals at BP Jetty and Exxon Fawley are timed at the Hook Buoy (Calshot). Times re Southampton Docks are alongside berth times.
If you can plan ahead there are a number of days in 2013 when 5 cruise ships are leaving at 16.30. Scroll down the dates.  http://www.southamptonvts.co.uk/Live_Information/Shipping_Movements_and_Cruise_Ship_Schedule/Cruise_Ship_Schedule/
