The Next Generation Cruise Ship
« on: January 25, 2013, 11:54:15 AM »
EOSEAS is the name of this concept cruise ship now on the drawing board in France. Key design principles: state-of-the-art technology, lowest possible operation costs and full respect for the environment.

So, what's wrong with that? I think it's a neat concept. The only thing is that it's STX France that's developing it instead of STX Finland :>

Yepp, not worse, than today's cruise ships, but also not pretty too - yet another ugly cruise ship. I would consider the sails in relation to total consumption only be a green fig leaf.

Those sails look primitive & actually spoiling the ships look.  For a futuristic cruise ship I would expect the use of some retractable wing sails.

Or wait, I would rather go on cruise on Sea Cloud or Royal Clipper than waste money on some tall ship wannabe.

Denis

According to the information I had access to, the 5 sails are semi-rigid and of a patented design. They have a total surface of 12440 m2, distributed by 5 masts. Apparently, when winds are of 30kts or higher, sails will be the only means of propulsion.

The major problem, however, seems to be the overall vessel dimensions:

L = 304 m, W = 60 m, H ~= 100 m

Length is not a problem. But with such gross width and height, the ship may not be able to enter several major ports of tourist interest, and when docked, it may become an obstacle to normal traffic at several other locations. She may ultimately be prevented to sail to many popular destinations...
