Costa Allegra reached her end?? How it comes?

She had an engine room fire off the Seychelles on 27/2/'12. She was left drifting for days until towed to one of the islands of the Seychelles. Later, in March of this year, she limped home to Savona, Italy, where she arrived on 24/3/'12. Afterwards she was laid up, first at the Fincantieri Sestri yard and then at Genoa itself. She was almost sold to some touroperator from Turkey, but those guys wanted the ship to be fully up and running and certified. Carnival wanted USD30 million for that. This was too much. In September 2012 the vessel was sold for scrappers for around USD7-10 million. She arrived at Aliaga on 24/10/'12.

It makes me very sad indeed to read this and to see the photo of her at Aliaga.
We did a 14 day cruise out of Singapore on her in 2009 and loved it. Frankly she became our favourite ship of those we have cruised. She was quirky, different, rolled to her own tune, and was very "Costa".
She had funny little touches in her design, like the round skylight in the Casino, that came up in the middle of the pool on the deck above, and the running water over the Murano bar that flowed from the spa above to the pool. And as for lunch in the main restaurant overlooking the stern.
Fantastic.
And just the right size also.
I am glad that I took all those interior shots now.
We had intended to do a Red Sea cruise on her before Egypt turned to custard, but have now missed that one.
That photo at Aliaga, heeling over, white funnel, unwanted amongst all that rubbish. Terrible.

But the memories will remain.

Mr. Psarras: Did you take any other photos of ships being scrapped at Aliaga, Turkey that day you were there? I live near Lake Superior and saw the remains of a Great Lakes ship being scrapped right next to the Costa Allegra. Its the vessel with the short black smokestack in the middle of your photo, about half of her is gone, use to be called the "Algocape"...There was another Great Lakes ship at Aliaga at the same time you were there. She was renamed "Don" for the trip to Aliaga. Has a big, tall smokestack, also painted all black. Very unique looking ship...If you have any other photos of these two ships, please post them on this site or this forum. Thank you very much! Terry Sechen
