Help identify ships from the story
« on: September 17, 2013, 05:19:05 PM »
There's a some story in my book about ships that I have since I was very young, it mentions 3 ships, but since their names are written in Russian how they are pronounced, I'm having a trouble finding the real ships.
The story is like this (translated from Russian):

"In 1974 in Mediterranean near Italy a chemical carrier Softat, that carried [some dangerous cargo in 900 barrels] collided with a merchant ship & sank.
...
In 1977 a salvage operation was planned to lift those barrels. But it would have been impossible without a special salvage ship Kastoro - length 150m, width 30m. [describes the ship had diving equipment & also a 800t crane by which the barrels were lifted & loaded on a special cargo ship Orsa]."

Is anyone familiar with the above? I know I might have typed ship names wrong - it could be Kastoro or Castoro or Custoro or etc.

This crane ship was possibly part of the salvage operation.

Thanks for those infos, so it's CAVTAT. http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=176609
I see there's mention of Saipem company so googling by that features the name of the salvage ship as Castoro II - http://www.saipem.com/site/article.jsp?idArticle=5403&instance=2&node=2012&channel=2&ext=template/37DueColonne&int=article/1DefaultArticolo.

Juergen, that ship was Sea Troll (has a sister ship EPTM 1601) during that time.
