Reefers to be scrapped
« on: March 13, 2012, 09:20:41 PM »

I've just been on board one the Spring ship from Seatrade.
All 5 Spring vessel will be with draw from their trade.

Most probably will end up on the scrapyard soon.

As the ships are due to dry-dock next year and refrigeration unit is still working on Freon 22 (R22). Freon 12 and 22 will discontinued in 2015 according new rules.

The ships involved:
Spring Bob
Spring Bear
Spring Panda
Spring Deli
Spring Dragon
The Spring Tiger is already being scrapped.

Think many more (nice looking) reefer ships will end up on the scrapyard next two years  :(.

Hi Frans
I was a few times with Seatrade ships in the RDM/Flushing area, all old ships now, think the Neerlandic is the youngest with around 20 years I sailed . another decade and they are all gone. mostly builded in japan in the 80,s, Sable Bay and glacier Bay,, Hudson Bay,, Nova Scotia and Nova Galicia (Galicia the onliest one I ever had which cooled still with brine) Was a good time, but then the containers took more and more over also in the reefer business so I sailed 4-5 years container, CSAV Santos, Libra santa Catarina, CSAV Rio lontue, etc etc
but they had 400 reefer plugs,, so virtually one had reefer capacity same size as a reg reefer ship in cotainers,, plus containers anyhow,,so I went to bulkers. No more containers, reefers or not,,,,
but sad to see them go. thanks the infos

brgds

NOW!!!,,,if we could get rid of the sailors,,how safe shipping would be !!!!!!!!

Hm, looks like I'm heavily into the reefer business today...:-)

Interesting (and sad) news! But what does "Freon" mean?

brgds,
Jens

"Freon" is DuPont's brand name for Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), gases used as a refrigerants.   They are being phased out under the Montreal Protocol of 1987 as they are particularly harmful to the ozone layer.

If these reefers go to Alang oder Gadani, in what way is the cooling fluid going to be handled. Can we expect all those climate unfriendly gases to be let into the atmosphere?
