MSC CAROLE (PANAMA)

London,Mar 1
A press report, dated today, states: Fully cellular containership MSC Carole (52191 gt, built 1989) under the alternating command of MSC and Maersk and which services the Australian trades, has ran aground on a reef, off the coast of Jakarta in so far unexplained circumstances on Feb 28. Crewmembers on board the vessel are reportedly safe. No oil pollution has been observed until the morning of Feb 29. A planned attempt to remove the vessel from the reef on the morning of Feb 29, failed. The vessel supposedly ran aground on a reef at some point on Feb 28 but no further details are currently available. Data from the AIS station at Jakarta, records the vessel as being stopped for 15 hours at 1848 hrs, Feb 27. Since then, AIS data indicates that the vessel has effectively stopped. Cargo on board the vessel will be transferred to Baltimore. No other information is available on Baltimore, as of now .MSC will be providing space on their Capricorn service as a contingency for the cargo o Fmsc Carole, Maersk reported. MSC Carole was working under a vessel sharing arrangement at the time of incident. An executive at MSC inAustralia denied that MSC had operational control of the vessel at the time of incident, stating instead that Maersk had control. A Maersk spokesman stated that at the time of incident, the vessel was under the overall control of Maersk, on that particular leg of the service. He also added that the vessel had MSC crew on board. Recovery operations are now being handled by MSC, the Maersk spokesman said

Interesting. I thought the MSC Carole was sold for scrap a few weeks ago. Seems her final voyage might be slightly delayed now!  ;)

the MSC Carole that went for scrap was the older one  -  IMO 7906928

The arrangements surrounding the current operation are confusing to say the least. When departing westbound from Australia it is under Maersk ' control '  and when she returns and heads northbound she is under 'MSC ' control.
The ship was sold by AP Moller to Seaspan  who in turn chartered her back -  and now have sort of sub leased it to MSC for trade name / marketing purposes only. I guess it is all ok until things go wrong and when fingers get pointed !!!

Even more odd is the fact that this ship was given an award here for their role in saving around 53 people out of the water when the PNG ferry Rabaul Queen sunk a few weeks ago -  maybe they got a bit carried away with their new found fame !!!

In general it is not the route and/or charterer who is in charge of running the vessel.
They usually only directing the route/rotation/port calls etcetc. The ship itself is usually
under a different management for crewing. That crewing agency can be inside the owners office , if he has one, usually as a one-ship-company or outsourced to a crewing agency, most of the time not in the country where the owners/operators/management resides.
Though,,yes it is complicated. But if a vessel has a accident like this for example, it is
in that matter not the fault of the charterer/operator but rather the fault of the crew which is placed by the crewing agency.
For that matter the crewing agency should be questioned where they get their crews and how they are trained to be qualified etc etc (STCW convention regulates the qualification of crews)
I would say in 9 out of 10 cases the media barks up the wrong tree in these cases. Of course it is much bigger news when a company like Maersk or MSC are in the news then will say , ABC-crewing ,with a office in Manila or Bangkok or wherever.
NOW!!!,,,if we could get rid of the sailors,,how safe shipping would be !!!!!!!!
