ULCV's built in Korea
« on: February 23, 2012, 12:55:54 PM »
There is a large number of very large container vessels out there with two "islands", like the "CMA CGM Christophe Colomb" or the "Maersk Essex". I count 50+ different names, running for 6 different companies, at least.

My questions concerning these are:

Are they all built in South Korea (Hyundai, Daewoo, Samsung)?
How many different types (or sub-types) are there?
Do they differ much in size or capacity?
Is there a common name for the "type" (like "Maersk E-class")?
Is there any webpage that can supply the answers?
I am sure there are a few members here, who can.
cheers
Uwe

Hi Uwe,

have a look here for further info:

http://www.containership-info.com/

currently the following shipping lines have this design of vessel:

MSC
CMA CGM
Maersk
CSCL
COSCO
UASC
Hanjin & Hapag Lloyd other lines with vessels on order

At present they are built at the following yards:

Hyundai Heavy Industries Ltd. Co, South Korea
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Ltd, South Korea
Samsung Shipbuilding & Heavy industries Co. Ltd, South Korea
STX Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., South Korea

Capacities basically range from 12,000 - 16,000 teu at present until Maersk lines 18,000 giants are launched

they are known as the "Twin island" type

hope the above assists

regards
Andrew

Thanks, Andrew, for your reply.

No doubt the site you suggest contains a mountain of useful information it is not an easy one to extract the answers I am looking for from.

But thanks anyway
cheers
Uwe

>Are they all built in South Korea (Hyundai, Daewoo, Samsung)?

So far, yes. At Hyundau HI, Hyundai Samho, STX, DSME, and Samsung. Orders at Hanjin (Philippines) have been canceled, but large container ships with a twin-island arrangement will also be delivered from Jiangsu New Yangzijiang, NAKS and plly a few others (CSBC) in the future. Basically all Japanse and Chinse Yards (i.e. Sadri) have similar designs ready. Furthemore, the design twin-isle principle will be applied to 9,000 teu ships too.

>How many different types (or sub-types) are there?

There is no answer to this since it depends upon when you consider ships identical: There are series of such ships with similar hull and same main engine, but slightly different superstructure and auxiliaries. At least a dozen variants exist.

>Do they differ much in size or capacity?

Presently between just under 13,000 (19-wide) and just over 14,000 (20-wide), including future deliveries the "type" (it's not a type actually...) will range from ca 9,000 teu (19-wide) to 16,000 teu (21-wide) and 18,000 teu (23-wide)

>Is there a common name for the "type" (like "Maersk E-class")?

No. Too many ships with too many idiosyncrasies will follow this arrangement, There is no point in lumping them together.

Edit: Hyundai MM has to be added to the list of operators which already have such vessels.
