1  Shipspotters all over the world / Shipping News and information / New lock in Zeebrugge on: December 22, 2018, 09:53:58 am
The port of Zeebrugge is due to get a second lock to connect the tidal part of the port to the non tidal part of the port. The new lock will be 427m long, 55m wide and 18.5m deep. The new lock will be built in the place of the old 1905 built Visart lock which is way too small for current ships.

The now lock will cost around €1 billion and should allow the port to remain competitive and keep its title as the worlds largest car port. Vehicle carriers are the most frequent visitors to the non tidal part of the port.

Apparently there was an engine room fire onboard Grimaldi's CRUISE AUSONIA (ex SUPERFAST XII). Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far.

Hi all,

As mentioned here a few pages back, the "not secure" banners in your browser only mean that this website is not using the https protocol. The technical team is working on this, but since it is a pretty big operation this may take some time. The banner "not secure" is therefor not really a problem or safety problem with the website as such, only that traffic between your computer and the shipspotting.com server is not encrypted. This is not a major issue since no financial or confidential information is exchanged here.

I hope this makes things clearer for everyone.

Kind regards
Cedric

7  Shipspotters all over the world / Shipping News and information / El. Venizelos fire on: August 29, 2018, 05:24:34 am
Hi all,

Several media outlets are reporting that a fire broke out onboard Anek Lines’ El. Venizelos which was on her way from Piraeus to Chaina on Crete. The vessel has turned around to Piraeus and several other ferries were assisting (Blue Horizon, Blue Star 1 and Mykonos Palace). The fire apparently started on her vehicle deck.

No injuries or casualties have been reported so far so at least that is good news.

It was my understanding the site is now safe.

My iPad also says this site is not secure and the apple security is NOT the same as Microsoft or malware bytes.

The only reason the iPad says that when you log in is because this website does not use HTTPS and thus communication between your iPad and the shipspotting.com server is not encrypted. This has nothing to do with an actual security problem, the browser is just pointing out to you that the website doesn't use HTTPS (a number of browsers are doing this now).

My misses has no problems with shipping as a hobby. That said I did move a 45 min drive away from the coast for work so most of my "shipping time" is spent here as a photo admin on this website.

Marine Traffic, Vessel tracker, FleetMon, etc., offer some sense/form of security with the ubiquitous padlock symbol displayed when visiting their sites.

That padlock symbol is doesn't mean that much anymore and can't guarantee safety on its own. It just means traffic to and from the server is encrypted so anyone snooping in on network traffic is can't intercept the data being sent. An https site could have the same problem if its servers were also affected.
