31  Shipspotters all over the world / Help and Advice / Re: What is the secret to posting a photo on: October 13, 2016, 09:40:28 pm
Hi vonkamp

Most photo editing programs have a Help tab or button that will lead to instructions that apply to its software.

I suggest you try that approach to find out how get your images to a size needed for uploading.

All members have had to learn how to do it

The information under the Photo Manipulation link on the Support tab may help.
See http://www.shipspotting.com/support/faq.php?category=Photo%20Manipulation

Enjoy the experience

My iPhone 6 still has the intrusive advertisement problem when trying to directly access the Home page. Shortcuts to other site pages work after more than one size opening screen

Sydney time 0720 24 September,  Europe time 2320 23 September

Hi Stephen

The problem you have described has been intermittently appearing on mobile devices - iPhones, iPads etc - for some time.  Often only on the Home screen.  Members have found that they can enter the site from another screen and then get to the Home screen

It is quite a different problem from the major outage of 21/22 September 2016

I do the same as John

"I now go onto the site using the forum and move on from there, it seems to be the home page that gets the problem."

The Home page then works OK

Hi coasterwatcher

The site is a collection of member's albums, not one album (except for Shipping Companies Funnel Marks)

Always provided Site Standards are met, any member is entitled to use personal judgement as to frequency, range and location of pics of one vessel uploaded to his/her album.

Thanks Vlad

I do believe that "popularity with members" and "number of hits" can sometimes be related.  And can be a source of pride for that member and a useful interest for other members.  You are too modest!

Like most Admin work, judgement (not a rigid rule) would be needed before following up a member whose hits seem unreal - as for at least one case where over a thousand hits were recorded for a pic without one Comment being made to it

Best regards
Clyde

Thank you David for encouraging a widening of debate about this issue

I believe that top of Home page 3 pics is one of the most popular features of this site.

That is manifested by the rapidity with which hits to a photo escalate rapidly when it reaches that spot.  Obviously there are many members and visitors who regularly go there while browsing the site.  They are the same (type of) people who click on Comments on the right hand side and thus generate hits. I suspect that many just like looking at what the site has to display.

Another source of hits comes from those who have a particular interest in a category such as Passenger or Military vessels, or the work of an admired member.

All responses are examples of the communication based strength of the site which any member can utilise.  For many it has become a path via which site based friendships are established.  That is not only pleasant for the individuals but strengthens the site and thus its future.

But the generation of hits from sources other than directly from members gives a distorted view of popularity with members. It is solely ego driven, not also the concept of sharing.  I hope that can be avoided by site programming, or Admin questioning of a member about unusual rapidity and volume of hits to one photo.

The problem has returned to my iPhone 6, intermittently.

Thank you David

Sorry! I found a more appropriate available image and forgot to change the link when I used it and deleted the earlier one.

Category Admin Brian Nicholls (Pier Master) agrees with this extra method for recording Shipspotting Locations.  The Category Standard / Guideline has been amended to show both methods

44  Shipspotters all over the world / Site related news, functions and modules / Re: What is the purpose of YOUR posting on shipspotting.com on: August 08, 2016, 10:45:12 pm
My purpose is to enjoy a retirement time hobby.  Each evening I check the Sydney Port Movements site to see what is scheduled for for the next day.  Sometimes there is nothing, as Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour) is not busy with ocean going ships.

Fortunately I live within 10/20 minutes of about a dozen camera locations, many elevated and most looking south with the sun over my shoulder. That, earlier pics, and other activities helps me plan my day. Better than going to work!   Commuter ferry trips can offer opportunities.  I sometimes forget my golden rule about my camera "Don't leave home without it" - an regret it.

I treat my album as one of thousands on a site which is a collection of albums.  I therefore do not allow other members photos to influence my selections.  I do enjoy looking at other's photos, advancing my knowledge of geography, noting composition and other skills, and exchanging Comments with members.  Communication opportunities are a major strength of the site.

My personal guidelines, rarely varied except for good reason are :
.Upload only one shot per ship per day
.Ensure each shot has a different location and/or angle and/or background than others of the same vessel
.Delete earlier uploads if I capture a better one from the same location and/or angle
.Make use of Sydney Harbour features, while keeping them from being background clutter interfering with ships masts etc.  There are not many locations from which only water and sky can be shown.
.Endeavor to keep Harbour traffic like ferries and work-boats out of the frame

Because of the wonder of rechargeable batteries and SD card sizes, I often take 40/50 shutter clicks from which to select one pic of a moving subject.

The remarks of others on this thread make interesting reading.  Thank you Tomas for starting it.

After Brexit A$ 500 AUD   = 343.11 EUR

But that may not be the shop price!
