I am about 150 km away from Portugal Cove. How far from land is it? I could try to go take pictures of it if it isn't too far.

34  Shipspotters all over the world / Shipping News and information / Question concerning beam length on the Great Lakes on: July 17, 2013, 12:36:46 pm
Does anybody have the answer to the following question?

I have a question: What is the MAX permitted beam of the salties
passing through the Seaway & Welland canal locks?

Nowhere I can find that information....

I noticed the heavy lift US flagged Maersk Illinois & Texas have 23 mtr and they visited Milwaukee, so they have cleared all
the locks without any problem.

Also noticed several Federal Bulkers with a beam of 27 mtrs, but
not so sure they go all the way up to CHI/Milwaukee area..

Thank you for your assistance.

I am back in Blanc Sablon so I won't be able to see anymore Great Lakes Bulkers. I think the Whitefish Bay is the first and the last for 2013. :-(

Glad to see this new ship arrive. Five shipspotters were waiting for its arrival on the St-Lawrence Seaway. Pictures were taken from Quebec City, Trois-Rivières, Contrecoeur, Verchères and Montreal. It was as if we had planned this event.

Good Job guys!

Thank you to Dave to have given me/us the heads-up!

Two pictures I took yesterday on my way up to Montreal for business :

That is sad news especially that I had met him in person. He was a knowledgeable and genuinely good person.

My thoughts are with his family.

Je veux souhaiter à la famille mes sincères condoléances.

RIP Kent...

At about 15h00 today the tour boat LOUIS JOLLIET ran aground near l'Île-d'Orléans. It is quite surpising since it offers small cruises along the St-Lawrence River 2-3x/day and has been doing this decades.

As of this morning, the BELLA DESGAGNÉS is in Port Meunier (Île Anticosti) and it is expected to leave shortly and head towards Sept-îles where it will get its christening ceremony on the 19th of April (tomorrow... weather permitting).

Thanks Paul,

At first I was discouraged when I thought of the possibility of it arriving in the darkness. It was a bit more challenging but I am kind of happy that it came in the dark because of the dramatic effect it gave.

ps. I am not sure 'you're the man' can be translated. Perhaps... 'toi tu l'as... man!' lol

Hi Marcel,

I went this morning to the dock at about 8AM and the ship was not there. If the tracking information is accurate, it will take another 4-5 hours for it to arrive. That is good since I am at work right now so I will be able to go after work. I promiss to post pictures tonight even if I have to use a flash!

Update (2013-04-11, 7h00)

Not sure if the information is correct but the BELLA DESGAGNES is of the coast of Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Judging from that position I would say that it will take between 10-12 hours to get to Blanc Sablon. That it how long it took me to take the ferry from Corner Brook to Blanc Sablon two weeks ago.
